The amazing thing is some of those bands are really old Bill. Venom in particular is one of the originators of an entire genre - death metal. Slayer is a Venom baby :) Venom and Slayer definately deserve a place on my list. "War Enseamble" is amazing. But I really like "South of Heaven". Whadda riff!

We all see things differently. Led Zeppelin was never "HEAVY METAL" imo. They were the lead in the path down "HARD ROCK" with some heavy blues riffs and rock arrangements. Bands like Guns 'n' Roses have Led Zep to thank.

Black Sabbath imo was the FIRST true metal band. Of course you had more obscure bands like Diamond Head during the NWOBHM, but Iron Maiden and Priest were more visible.

Keep in mind the original poster asked to list best heavy metal "SONGS" and once again I'm like many who have gone off on a tangent comparing bands and styles.

In fact, most of the tunes listed here will suffice as great rock/metal tunes. Of course ymmv.

All the bands here look good, everyone...but if I may recommend something to you all. If you want a metal album as epic as the greatest story ever told (whatever it may be), and a metal album that will entice you and chill you from beginning to end, please make it a point to purchase Blind Guardian's "Somewhere Far Beyond". This album has been nothing but a blessing to me.

God im glad that im not alone.....there is so much shtty music now, shit i dont listen to the radio unless its playing some old thrash (haha slim chance in hell)....and im glad i dont have Satellite anymore or id be exposed to even more crap. actually that show URANIUM, has some pretty good shit sometimes. anyway.....thse bands nowadays, nothing but a bunch of chumps....no concept of music. what the fuck happened to the solo? I truly believe the last guitarist to stick true to his roots is Dimebag Darrell.....fuck nu-metal, ska, punk, hardcore, and all that other shit. Im sorry to break it to you, but uhm....haha, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Evanescence, and the other bands already listed....well, THEY ARENT METAL!!!!!!evanescence is some new wave shit. Led Zeppelin is Hard Rock...I listen to a little Led, and to some Nirvana, but if i hear someone call them metal, im going to hurt you....serously, get a clue.

Ok 3 doors down isn't metal, it's not even punk, it is pop rock with little grunge influence but it is NEVER going to be metal. Neither does Nirvana who everybody knows is definetly grunge.

My fav. metal band definetly is Children of Bodom. Songs Lake Bodom, Downfall, Everytime I die, You're better off dead... and I guess Metallica isn't bad, the first albums were real good (kill em all was their best, along with master of puppet, Seek and Destroy being my fav. song intro). Plus I want to add that Manson's music is NOT really good metal, it's just commercial stuff. And Rammstein isn't such a good metal band after all. Slayer got pretty good solos (though really chaotic), and I want to add that yes, Led Zeppelin defined the name (and forged it) Heavy Metal. Yes, like punk, and sadly, rap, it has evolved. Maybe not always for the better (like these 2 examples) but it has evolved. You know Grindcore is an evolution of punk music? It must of walked a long road (and litterally forgot how to use a guitar) from the Sex Pistols to Fuck I'm Dead and Captain Cleanoff, but it shows how music can dramatically change. So yeah, Led Zeppelin was metal. It does not meet recent criterias for metal music, but it was metal when it came out. Music is like drugs: when you take your first puff, you might get high right there (depends on the person and the quality), but slowly people (no matter who) get a better tolerance for the drug and the puff you took years ago wouldn't even have an effect on you after years of intense use. Like people thought the Beatles were rebel when they started, today, no one would complain about it if it was aired, except to say that it is lame and boring.

I wouldn't qualify slipknot of being a metal band. More of a noize army. A band of 20 people isn't a band anymore, it's an orchestra, but an orchestra is supposed to be harmonic, or melodic, or both. And Slipknot isn't really, more of a circus than anything else.

No, of course Led Zeppelin was not metal, maybe heavy metal along with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple - 2 bands also soaked in blues. But Led Zeppelin lit the first torch. Ask your mummies and daddies to play you mid-to-late 60s music. You'll hate it. Then buy Led Zeppelin Remasters and listen to "Dazed and Confused" recorded in 1969 and listen especially to this section: min. 3.27 - min. 4.46. With that said, they did nothing else after that as they went softer and more mellow.

It is so amusing how all the older metal heads or ones that are specifically into old metal are so scared of up and coming bands. I myself am a huge fan of classic metal, but one has to notice the amount of bands that have been around the past 6 years that are just starting to get the attention they deserve. Bands such as Soilwork, In Flames, and yes look out world, Australian metal is on the rise: Daysend, Frankenbok, Psi-Kore are going to kick ass! And I do agree that Opeth rule, and the epic "The Drapery Falls" should be an inclusion in the list.

Well Piedjay how very confused you are. Sure this is a discussion of the greatest metal songs of all time, and only metal songs should be included. But alas, the differences between hard rock and metal are sometimes non-existent. Thus, bands that some classify as metal, but others as hard rock, are included. Quite fair, and hold a genuine place in the discussion. However, your so called "fine hard rock" is beyond this and is an insult to this site. Alien Ant Farm? Linkin Park? Hoobastank? POD? And the greatest profanity in the English language, Limp Bizkit? Do not get me wrong, some of the aformentioned bands have some quality songs, but none that I would classify as metal or even hard rock.

Limp Bizkit do suck ass though.

So far garageinc2 has had the most accurate and broad view of some of the greatest metal songs ever. I have to give you two thumbs up for the Speed of Light mention. Awesome song. If we are talking Stratovarius, I would put that and Black Diamond as their greatest songs.
